WORKSHOP: Introduction to Advanced Agile Development

Alistair Cockburn Photo Workshop Leader: Alistair Cockburn - Co-author of the Agile Manifesto

Dr. Alistair Cockburn is a world-renowned expert at Agile development, the early and regular delivery of business value through improved communications, fast feedback and staged delivery.

Alistair co-founded the Agile development movement, co-authoring the Manifesto for Agile Software Development and the project leadership Declaration of Inter-dependence. He wrote the Jolt-Productivity Award-winning book on the subject, Agile Software Development.

Working in research, academia, and industry since 1974, doing computer hardware design, software design, process design and project management, Alistair helps companies align their strategies and actions with their purpose, injecting lightweight Agile methods into projects needing improvement. This involves improving community and communications in the organisation, increasing visibility as to what is planned and what is happening, streamlining projects, and introducing simpler, more effective techniques to different roles.

Alistair has been special advisor to the Central Bank of Norway, methodology designer for the IBM Consulting Group, and lead consultant, process designer, teacher and coach at organisations such as Ralston Purina, the First Rand Group of banks in South Africa, Schlumberger oil services, Fireman's Fund insurance company, the Intermountain HealthCare hospital group, and others organisations both large and small around the world.

Alistair Cockburn's personal philosophy states: "Computers must support the way in which people naturally and comfortably work, for job satisfaction and for corporate survival. I am committed to speeding this development by improving human communities, human-to-computer communication, and efficient, humane working methods."

Tuesday 14 June 2011 | 2.00PM - 5.30PM [with lunch and afternoon tea]

Beyond collecting tips and tricks to apply in sticky situations, it is time to start examining the lines of force that lead us to understand what works, why it works, and how to analyse situations to derive solutions. The Agile community is mature enough by now to take this next step. In this workshop, we will review five sections of theory about designing in teams, and then move into groups to select and discuss problems and their solutions. Dr Alistair Cockburn will review and co-analyse with the groups the problems and the analyses.
