Using Cynefin to tailor your strategy

with Kim Ballestrin
Manager Principal Consultant, Elabor8
Learn how to use approaches based on the Cynefin Framework to manage complexity and ambiguity in your work and strategy.

There are plenty of tools, approaches and processes for the development and execution of strategy - and many arguments about which ones are the best. Surprisingly, all of them are good when applied in the appropriate context. In this workshop we will use approaches based on the Cynefin Framework (a Sensemaking framework) to understand the levels of certainty and ambiguity in systems and parts of systems. If you need to tackle questions such as which projects should use waterfall or Agile approaches, or you have a sense that one way is not the best way for everything, then this workshop will equip you with tools to surface and resolve the differing points of view.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • An overview of the Cynefin Framework
  • A way to understand the levels of complexity and ambiguity in the sub-components of our work
  • A complex facilitation technique to surface and resolve multiple points of view.

Liberating cultural evolution

with Alison Cameron
Co-founder, Adaptive Cultures
Learn how to unleash the evolutionary potential of individuals, teams, organisations and our world!

Culture is often highlighted as one of the key reasons while Agile or any kind of transformation fails.

On the upside - this means it is also a significant contributor to successful transformations.

Human beings are hardwired to adapt and evolve, the challenge is that many traditional ways of living and working suppress our evolutionary impulse and adaptive capacity.

While all organisations know they need to become more “Agile” many underestimate the development of Adaptive Capacity required to enable true agility.

In this workshop you will have the opportunity to:

  • Experience a framework for cultural evolution which helps people to understand and practically work with culture and how to use it to build adaptive, Agile and flourishing organisations
  • Learn how to use this framework to diagnose and navigate cultural evolution
  • Come away with language, frameworks and narratives to enable understanding of and re-engagement with our evolutionary capacity
  • Reflect on your own development and take away ideas and tools to amplify your ability to influence evolution
  • Understand and learn how to practically apply ideas like “organisations as living systems”
  • Develop greater insight in how to unleash personal agency, self-authorship, caring and purpose in yourself, your team and your organisation.

Designing Calm Technology

with Amber Case
Cyborg anthropologist and user experience designer
The idea behind Calm Technology is to have smarter people, not things. Technology shouldn’t require all of our attention, just some of it, and only when necessary.
The difference between an annoying technology and one that is helpful is how it engages our attention.Calm Technology is a framework for designing ubiquitous devices that engage our attention in an appropriate manner. The aim of Calm Technology is to provide principles that follow the human lifestyle and environment in mind, allowing technology to amplify humanness instead of taking it away.

This workshop will cover how to use principles of Calm Technology to design the next generation of connected devices. We’ll look at notification styles, compressing information into other senses, and designing for the least amount of cognitive overhead.

Attend this workshop to learn how to:

  • Use principles of Calm Technology to design the next generation of connected devices
  • Design appropriate notification systems into both physical and software products
  • Communicate the principles of Calm Technology to your across your organisation and team
  • Use methods of Calm Technology to design technology for generations, not seasons
  • Enter your product successfully into the marketplace.

This workshop is for anyone that actively builds or makes decisions about technology, especially user experience designers, product designers, managers, creative directors and developers. Attendees are encouraged to have some background in user experience design and look at calmtech.com or the book Calm Technology before the workshop.
